Bangkok Trains - Guide for First Timers

Updated: Jan 10

If you are a first-time traveler to Bangkok having no bulky luggage and your port of arrival is Suvarnabhumi [read as sue-wahn-ah-poom] Airport, here are some guides that may help you get to your hotel or destination the fastest way.

On arrival

The arrival area is on the 2nd level of the building. There are English signage on the hallway that will lead you to the immigration area or anywhere inside the airport. After securing your entry stamp from the immigration officer and claim your luggage bag, you may proceed to the exit area and from there you will find money exchange outlets, tourist sim card desk, information counter, and ATM machines. If you want to explore inside the building, you may go to the 4th level which is the departure area, the 3rd level is the meeting area where you will find plenty of restaurants and coffee shops, and the 1st level is the transportation area where you can take the shuttle bus or taxi cabs. In hiring a taxi cab, you will need to secure your tickets from the queuing machine that are located outside the building near the exit doors (adjacent to gates 3, 4 & 5). An additional 50 Baht will be charged to you by the driver. Some drivers will ask you to pay fix amount of money and not use their taxi meter. Beware and don’t be fooled by excessive charges. Always check the distance of your destination from the airport and the appropriate amount you need to pay.

Travelers fall in line to get their tickets for a taxi which are also queued in the parking area opposite the queuing machines.

Shuttle buses are free but the point of destinations are limited only to selected areas of the city center. The sky train is located in the B-Level (basement) of the building. Secure your token from the machines available and find your way down to the train station. Transportation costs ranges from 15 - 45 Baht depending on your point of destination. There are plenty of guides on the internet. You may check this link https://www.bangkokairportonline.com/suvarnabhumi-airport-terminal-map/ for the airport map.

Fastest route to the city center

The Airport Rail Link is the most accessible mode of transportation from Suvarnabhumi Airport. This sky train connects to Phetchaburi station of MRT from Makkasan Link, and to Phayathai station of BTS which is also the termination point of the Airport Rail Link. Do not be confused, MRT stands for Metro Railway Transit or the underground railway which is also known as the Blue and Purple Lines while BTS stands for Bangkok Mass Transit System which is also known as the Sukhumvit and Silom Lines.
